Language learning at Morton is a lively mix of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
We begin the academic year with a whole school celebration of the European Day of Languages. From nursery through to Year 6, all children learn a few words of a new language each year and take part in a range of creative activities. We celebrate the home languages of our EAL community and welcome parents to take part in a morning assembly.
Formal language learning happens in KS2 when Year 3 are first introduced to French. For four years, our pupils make progress in all four skills and learn about aspects of Francophone life: making masks for Mardi Gras, decorating paper fish for April 1st pranks and crowning a King or Queen for Epiphany. They learn of French as a global language, studying aspects of geography and culture.
Children at Morton enjoy languages and are confident and resilient learners. By the end of KS2, our pupils are ready for the study of a foreign language in secondary school.
